What is Organic Coffee and Why is it Important? - NO HARM DONE

Big basket of coffee beans

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. It’s a delicious, caffeinated way to start your day, a great drink to enjoy with friends and the perfect way to end a meal. It’s also a versatile drink that can be enjoyed iced and hot. There are a lot of different coffee beans available, so it can be difficult to decide what to buy. You also have to choose between organic and non-organic beans. Which one should you choose? Let’s take a closer look at why you should always use organic coffee.

What is Organic Coffee?

Organic coffee is produced on farms that have not used synthetic chemicals and use few artificial fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides for three years. Most organic farms also compost, recycle, and work to preserve the health of the soil they are using.

Why Organic Coffee?

The health benefits of organic coffee outweigh those of non-organic coffee. Coffee has a lot of health benefits besides helping you make it through a boring meeting and giving you energy for the day.

  • Coffee is a great source of anti-oxidants which help eliminate the damages caused by free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative stress which can lead to serious health problems, like inflammation, hormone imbalances and even cancer.
  • When you drink organic coffee, you are choosing coffee beans that have not been affected by outside sources like pesticides and other chemicals. You are guaranteed to be getting the full health benefits of coffee without any of the chemicals used in pesticides.

Organic coffee is also good for the environment. While pesticides do eliminate harmful insects that eat crops, they all also harm the environment. They can take out more than the “pests” they are supposed to be killing. Pesticides can easily leak into nearby water sources and to other fields. This leads to imbalances in the environment.

Organic farms are also safer and more efficient for their workers while also using fewer non-renewable resources.

What are the Dangers of Non-Organic Coffee?

As mentioned non-organic coffee farms use chemicals such as pesticides and insecticides to kill insects before they can harm the crops. However, these chemicals are ingested by us when we drink coffee. This can lead to many health problems.

According to WHO, some health problems caused by pesticides include cancer, effects on reproduction, immune or nervous systems.

Furthermore, those in contact with pesticides daily (such as farmers) are at a higher risk of being poisoned. This can lead to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.
